Wildpainting is freeing the mind by making art with strong colours in the open landscape, engaging all one's senses.

Imagine yourself arriving in one of the wildest places of Europe, Jotunheimen National Park, among majestic mountains with names like Glittertinden (the glittering peak) or Gjendetunga (the tongue of Gjende). The crisp mountain air, the feast of colours of rare mountain flora around you, the turquoise glow of the glacier lake. One can become ecstatic by just being there, immersed in the silence and the drama of the landscape.

We offer a course where you can try to express this experience of deep immersion in wild nature through art! A professional art teacher will help you get started, encourage you along the way, and invite you to paint the landscape in new, uncommon, and refreshing ways!

Practical

Painting sessions

This Wildpainting course will be held from Sunday August 27 to Thursday August 31, 2023.

The art sessions will be between 9.30 am and 15.00 pm (with a short break for lunch). We will go out and paint in the stunning natural environment around Gjendebu tourist hut, weather permitting. Teacher is Jan van Boeckel, a Dutch artist and professional art teacher.

Each participant will receive intensive personal tutorials, at his or her own level. The workshops are suited for any enthusiastic painter, beginners and people at a more advanced level alike.

Course fee

The course fee is €500. This includes use of all art materials (acrylic paint, heavy paper, easels, brushes). Not included are lodging and food at Gjendebu turisthytte, see below.

Lodging and food

During this course we will stay at the Gjendebu turisthytte. Participants will be offered a reduced rate for food & lodging approx. €100 p.p.p.n. Our local host will be happy to inform you of possibilities.
There are a few camping spots at 15 minutes walking distance from Gjendebu turisthytte.
We recommend arriving Saturday afternoon, 26 August. The closing session will be on Thursday at 14.00 pm, allowing enough time for packing to those who want to take the ferry back to the road.

Location

We will paint in the vicinity of the DNT Gjendebu turisthytte in the middle of Jotunheimen National Park, beautifully situated at the west end of Lake Gjende. Participants can arrive by ferry or by a scenic two-day hiking trip. Check the hiking map here.

Travel by car:
Drive to Gjendesheim hotel and leave your car at the long-term parking lot. Regular buses will shuttle you from the car park to the ferry.

Travel by bus:
The VY bus takes you from the downtown Oslo busterminal to Gjendesheim in 4,5 hours. Two persons travelling together will receive a 'group reduction'. Make sure to book the morning bus which arrives in time for the afternoon ferry.

The ferry Gjendesheim–Gjendebu departs two times daily at:
* 07.45 am, arriving at Gjendebu 08.30 am,
* 15.20 pm, arriving at Gjendebu at 16.05 pm.
The fare is about €25 p.p. one way.
