Wildpainting is freeing the mind by making art with strong colours in the open landscape, engaging all one's senses.

Imagine yourself hiking in one of the wildest places of Europe: the majestic mountains with names like Glittertinden (the glittering peak) or Gjendetunga (the tongue of Gjende). The crisp mountain air, the feast of colours of rare mountain flora around you, the turquois colour of the glacier lake. One can become ecstatic by just being there, immersed in the silence and the drama of the landscape.
Now imagine one other possibility: you’d like to express this deep immersion in wild, free nature through art, and as it happens the art materials have already been brought there, for you to use! And an experienced art teacher will help you get started, encourage you along the way, and invite you to paint the landscape in new, uncommon and refreshing ways!

Practical

Painting sessions

This Wildpainting course will be held from Monday the 10th to Friday the 14th of August 2020. Participants arrive hiking the scenic trails or by ferry latest on Monday morning at 10.30am. The closing session will be on Friday at 14.00pm, allowing enough time for packing to those who want to take the ferry back to the road. The art-making sessions will be between 9.30am and 15.00pm (with a short break for lunch). We will go out and paint in the stunning natural environment around Gjendebu tourist hut, weather permitting. Teacher is Jan van Boeckel, a qualified Dutch artist and art teacher. He has become specialized in facilitating wildpainting courses, focusing on drawing and painting closer to nature in a colourful way, and thereby using all of one's senses. Each participant will receive intensive personal tutorials, at his or her own level. The workshops are suited for any enthusiastic painter, beginners and people at a more advanced level alike.

Course fee

The course fee is NOK 3500 ( app. € 350) - and this includes all art materials (acrylic paint, heavy paper, easels, brushes). Not included are lodging and food at Gjendebu. A minimum of 6 participants is required for this course to take place. Notice: We want to encourage participants to come to our courses through public transportation rather than by flying. Therefore those who travel from afar and choose to come by train or bus (and are able to show proof of this) will get a discount of 25% of the course fee!

Lodging

Picture
You can stay at the Gjendebu turisthytte (fee: NOK 847 pp/night including full board and the use of linens/towels). It is recommended to make reservations directly with our host at Gjendebu hytta, Lars Åge Hilde. Observe: Due to the condition that at least 6 participants register for this course for it to take place, we advise not to make binding bookings prior to the moment you have received confirmation from us that the course will indeed take place. Gjendebu turisthytte is beautifully situated at the west end of lake Gjende, in the geographic centre of Jotunheimen National Park, the most famous mountain area in Norway. Gjendebu is the oldest of the huts belonging to the Norwegian Mountaineering Association (Den Norske Turistforening – DNT), and was established in 1871.

Location

As often as possible, our atelier will be the outdoors, near Gjendebu turisthytte in the middle of Jotunheimen National Park. Gjendebu turisthytte is beautifully situated by the west end of the lake Gjende. Check the hiking map here.

How to get there:

By car:
You can travel to Gjendesheim hotel by car and leave your car at the long-term parking lot. A shuttle van will take you from there to the ferry, which
takes you across the full length of lake Gjende to Gjendebu hytte.

By bus:
You can also reach Gjendebu by taking a bus from Oslo bus terminal to Gjendesheim.

The bus trip from Oslo to Gjendesheim takes 4,5 hours, and is very scenic. The fare is about € 42 p.p. one way. Two persons travelling together will receive a 'group reduction'. If you leave Oslo at 10:25 am, you will arrive well in time in Gjendesheim (at 15:05 am) to be able to catch the afternoon ferry to Gjendebu hytta.

The ferry from Gjendesheim departs two times daily: leaving 07.45 am, arriving at Gjendebu 08.30 am, or leaving 15.20 pm, arriving at Gjendebu at 16.05 pm. The price of the ferry ticket is about € 21 p.p. one way.
Tickets for both bus and boat can be ordered online. Booking a bus ticket online is cheaper than buying a ticket on the bus.
