Tiny Island Painting Course

7 - 11 June, 2019
BOOK
fully booked
Colourful days on the enchanting island SydKoster on the west coast of Sweden with teacher Jan van Boeckel
The course will be taught both in English and Swedish

We will paint in the spirit of Paul Cézanne, who wanted to see and sense the objects he was painting - the rocks, the sea, the pine tree - rather than think about them. Ultimately, he wanted to get to the point where "sight" was also "touch".
It is in the varied landscape of South Koster that we will paint both land- and seascapes. The special quality of the light of Sweden’s west coast has inspired many artists, and in June it is almost as if the sun does not set at night.

Our atelier will be at Kosters Trädgårdar, a permaculture garden, restaurant and course venue. The first thing you notice upon arrival is the smell of the sea, earth and freshly baked bread. The farm is known for its welcoming restaurant, lush gardens and green house which often houses art exhibitions.
The Koster islands, North and South Koster, are Sweden’s most westerly populated islands; they are a walker’s dream, there are almost no cars.

Wildpainting is allowing yourself to paint in ways you may have never attempted before and to immerse yourself in a natural environment that invites opening of all the senses.
This wildpainting course is open both to beginners and to more experienced painters. Allow yourself to be inspired to paint in a new way!

Painting Course

We will start painting on Friday morning, June 7. Participants arrive latest on the Thursday before. The course will be taught by Jan van Boeckel, an experienced Dutch artist and art teacher. All participants will receive intensive personal tutorials. On Tuesday evening, June 11, we will have a vernissage and exhibition of our paintings. On Wednesday morning, participants leave for home again.

Course Fee

The course fee is €650 and includes meals (breakfast, coffee/tea, warm lunches and light evening meals), painting materials, excursions on the island, as well as the vernissage party on the final course day. Please note: in the event of too few participants, we reserve the right to cancel the course. In this case we will offer the participants the opportunity to enrol in another course or to receive a full refund of the course fee (see Terms & Conditions). When the course is confirmed, it can be wise to be early with your bookings of flights, trains and accommodation, in order to get a good rate.
Lodging

Lodging is not included in the course price. We will be lodged in surrounding accommodations (within short walking distance from our atelier), SEK 300 pp/pn.
Rooms are shared, extra cost of 100 SEK/night for a single room. Please indicate your preference when you book. There is also an option to sleep in a tent: ask the host for details. You will have to bring your own sheets and towel.
Meals

The meals will be prepared by the highly acclaimed kitchen staff of Kosters Trädgårdar.
The restaurant is certified by A Taste of West Sweden. This certification is reserved for restaurants, producers and farm shops which offer sustainable and genuine west Swedish products and dining, all based on local seasonal produce. Comments by former participants

Somehow I feel less controlled and more playful when I paint in stronger colours, I can let go. And I allow my ‘personal handwriting’ to grow, and the pictures develop to be much more expressive. I feel that I have finally found my own ‘language’ in how to paint.                                               Susan
Jan van Boeckel is a warm, engaging art teacher. His outstanding teaching methods, his painting skills and his passion for art and art history are very inspiring. He attends to each student's unique potential - no one will feel overlooked under Jan's caring guidance. In addition, he has the exceptional habit to join in with the students and paint for himself along with them. Thank you for a wonderful course!

Good atmosphere. "Högt i tak", as we say in Sweden. The food - made painting even better!! Nice reviewing sessions.
