Wildpainting course at the side of
Mount Skjorta, Norway

with teacher Jan van Boeckel
The course will be taught in English
Picture
Imagine being at an art gallery and studio looking out on a crystal clear lake – Breimsvatnet –  filled with water coming directly from a nearby glacier. Galleri Skarstein is in Kandal, a small village with a population of 87 that stretches along the shore of the lake for about 5 kilometres. Towards the south is the grand view of mount Skjorta, almost towering vertically up from the lake surface. It is here, in this magic and majestic area, that we will paint, exploring the shifts in colour of the mountain, lake and valley in the midst of the summer, with its almost endless light. This will be the fourth time we have a wildpainting course here, with Astrid Kallhovd as our host and excellent cook!

Part of the course are long hikes to the summer pastures for sheep and goats further up in the mountains. Here are the charming basic huts where milking and cheese making take place. Drawings made here will be the basis for larger paintings that will be created later at the art gallery.

Wildpainting is allowing yourself to paint in ways you may have never attempted before and to immerse yourself in a natural environment that invites engaging all the senses.
This wildpainting course is open both to beginners and to more experienced painters. Allow yourself to be inspired to paint in a new way!

Painting Course

We will start painting on Monday morning, August 1. Participants arrive latest on the Sunday before. The course will be taught by Jan van Boeckel, a Dutch artist and professional art teacher. All participants will receive intensive personal tutorials. On Friday evening, August 5, we will have a vernissage. On Saturday morning, participants leave for home again.

Course fee

The course fee is €700 and includes food (breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee/tea), painting materials, excursions, as well as the vernissage party on the final course day. Please note: : if the course cannot run due to a sudden change of covid restrictions,  you as participant will be reimbursed the full course fee. However, if you at that point have already made other costs in relation to the course such as bookings for travel and accommodation, these costs unfortunately will not be refunded. Lodging

Lodging is not included in the course price. We will be lodged on Skarstein gård, which offers rooms ranging from simple standard (NOK 100 pppn) to normal standard (NOK 150 pppn). In addition to single and double bedrooms, there are also two accommodations with very simple standard, such as the boathouse down by the lake (NOK 50 pppn). Please inquire with our local host about lodging. In case you prefer a more luxurious accommodation, there's also the option to book a room at the neighbouring farm Solvane gård.

Comments by former participants

Somehow I feel less controlled and more playful when I paint in stronger colours, I can let go. And I allow my ‘personal handwriting’ to grow, and the pictures develop to be much more expressive. I feel that I have finally found my own ‘language’ in how to paint.                                               Susan
Jan van Boeckel is a warm, engaging art teacher. His outstanding teaching methods, his painting skills and his passion for art and art history are very inspiring. He attends to each student's unique potential - no one will feel overlooked under Jan's caring guidance. In addition, he has the exceptional habit to join in with the students and paint for himself along with them. Thank you for a wonderful course!

Good atmosphere. "Högt i tak", as we say in Sweden. The food - made painting even better!! Nice reviewing sessions.
